Pre-Roll Etiquette for the Trailhead

There’s something special about taking your favorite pre-roll into the great outdoors. Fresh air, open trails, mountain views, and a little time away from the everyday can make for an unforgettable experience.

But enjoying cannabis on or around a trail comes with a little responsibility. Good trail etiquette means respecting the people around you, protecting the environment, and knowing the rules before you light up.

Here’s how to keep your outdoor session relaxed, respectful, and leave-no-trace friendly.

Know Before You Go

Before heading out, take a moment to check the rules for the area you’re visiting.

Cannabis laws and park regulations can vary significantly depending on the state, city, national park, forest, or trail system. Some public lands prohibit cannabis use even when it’s legal in the surrounding state.

A quick check before your trip can save you from an unnecessary problem once you reach the trailhead.

Pro tip: If cannabis consumption isn’t permitted at your destination, enjoy your pre-roll somewhere legal before or after your adventure instead.

Be Mindful of Other Hikers

Not everyone wants to smell cannabis while they’re enjoying the outdoors.

Even if you’re somewhere cannabis use is permitted, consider the people sharing the trail with you. Families, runners, cyclists, hikers, and other outdoor enthusiasts may all have different preferences.

If you’re in an area where consumption is allowed, choose a location away from crowded trailheads, busy overlooks, picnic areas, and narrow sections of the trail.

A little consideration goes a long way.

Keep Your Session Low-Key

The trail is there for everyone.

If you decide to consume where it’s permitted, keep your experience discreet and avoid turning a peaceful hiking area into a party spot. Be conscious of your volume, your smoke, and the space you’re taking up.

The goal is simple: enjoy your surroundings without disrupting someone else’s experience.

Pack It In. Pack It Out.

One of the most important rules of outdoor recreation is also one of the easiest:

Whatever you bring with you, take it back out.

That includes:

• Pre-roll tubes

• Packaging

• Filters

• Ash

• Matches or lighters

• Food wrappers

• Any other waste

Never leave a roach on the trail or toss it into the woods. Besides being litter, improperly discarded cannabis waste can become a fire hazard and can be harmful to wildlife.

Bring a small sealable container or designated waste bag so you have somewhere to store everything until you reach a proper trash or recycling bin.

Respect the Wildlife

Cannabis and wildlife don’t mix.

Don’t leave cannabis, edibles, food, packaging, or other products where animals can access them. Wildlife may be curious about unfamiliar smells and objects, and what seems harmless to you can be dangerous for an animal.

Keep your belongings secured and your food packed away when you’re taking a break.

The best outdoor experience is one where you leave the environment looking exactly as you found it.

Be Careful Around Fire

A pre-roll may seem harmless, but dry vegetation and fire can be a serious combination.

Never discard a lit joint or cigarette into grass, leaves, or brush. Follow local fire restrictions and avoid smoking anywhere that could create a wildfire risk.

If conditions are dry or the area has a fire ban, skip the smoke entirely.

There will always be another trail day.

Don’t Drive Impaired

This one is non-negotiable.

If cannabis is part of your outdoor plans, make sure you have a safe way home that doesn’t involve driving while impaired.

Plan transportation ahead of time, travel with a sober driver, or wait until you’re safely back home before consuming.

A great day outside isn’t worth putting yourself or anyone else at risk.

Leave the Trail Better Than You Found It

Good trail etiquette extends beyond cannabis.

Stay on designated paths, respect wildlife, don’t disturb plants or natural features, and carry your trash with you. Keep dogs under control where required and give other hikers plenty of space.

Think of yourself as a guest in the environment.

The mountains, forests, lakes, and trails belong to everyone—and taking care of them means they’ll be there for the next adventure.

The Golden Rule of Trailside Cannabis

When in doubt, remember three things:

Know the rules. Respect the people around you. Leave no trace.

Cannabis and the outdoors can make a great combination when enjoyed responsibly. Take the time to understand where consumption is allowed, keep your session considerate, and protect the environment you’re there to enjoy.

Because the best trail experience isn’t just about reaching the destination.

It’s about respecting the journey along the way.
